NCERT Class 7 Maths Chapter 1
Large Numbers Around Us
This chapter from Ganita Prakash Part 1 helps CBSE Class 7 students develop a strong understanding of large numbers in the Indian and International numeration systems. Students learn to read, write, and compare numbers up to crores and beyond, using place value and expanded form. Real-life contexts like population figures and national budgets make the learning meaningful and practical.

Key Terms
- Place Value
- The value of a digit in a number depending on its position. For example, in 4,73,892, the digit 4 is in the lakhs place, so its place value is 4,00,000.
- Indian Numeration System
- A system of expressing numbers using places like ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, lakhs, ten lakhs, crores, and so on, used primarily in India.
- International Numeration System
- A number system using places like ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands, millions, and billions, used internationally.
- Expanded Form
- A way of writing a number as the sum of the values of all its digits based on their place values. For example, 3,45,678 = 3,00,000 + 40,000 + 5,000 + 600 + 70 + 8.
- Crore
- A unit in the Indian numeration system equal to 10 million or 1,00,00,000 (one followed by seven zeros).
- Estimation
- Finding a value close to the exact answer by rounding numbers to a convenient place value, useful for quick mental calculations.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the Indian and International numeration systems?▾
In the Indian system, numbers are grouped from the right as: ones, tens, hundreds, then groups of two (thousands, lakhs, crores). In the International system, numbers are grouped in threes after the first three digits (thousands, millions, billions). For example, 1 crore = 10 million.
How do you read large numbers in the Indian numeration system?▾
Place commas from the right: first after 3 digits, then every 2 digits. For example, 47,38,65,219 is read as forty-seven crore thirty-eight lakh sixty-five thousand two hundred and nineteen.
How do you convert a number from the Indian system to the International system?▾
Group the digits from the right in sets of three to get the International form. For example, 1,00,00,000 (1 crore in Indian system) becomes 10,000,000 which equals 10 million in the International system.
What is the place value of a digit in a large number?▾
The place value of a digit is its face value multiplied by its position value. For example, in 6,45,321, the digit 4 is in the ten-thousands place, so its place value is 4 × 10,000 = 40,000.
Why is estimation of large numbers useful?▾
Estimation is useful when an approximate answer is enough for decision-making, such as budgeting or comparing large quantities. For example, rounding 4,87,635 to the nearest lakh gives 5,00,000, which is easier to work with mentally.
