Calculate Score

Negative marking decides far more outcomes than most candidates realise. In exams like UPSC, NEET, JEE Main, SSC CGL, and RRB NTPC, the gap between qualifying and missing the cutoff is often a handful of wrong answers rather than a shortfall of knowledge. These free calculators apply each exam’s exact marking scheme so you can convert an answer key — or your best memory of the paper — into a realistic net score in seconds, with no signup.

Different exams penalise mistakes differently: a wrong answer might cost you one-third of the marks (UPSC, RRB), one-fourth (NEET, JEE), one-half (SSC CGL Tier 1), or a flat 0.25 (most banking exams). Pick your exam below to load the correct rule, or use the custom calculator for any scheme not listed.

Frequently asked questions

What is negative marking?

Negative marking is a scoring rule in which a fraction of the marks for a question is deducted for each wrong answer. It is used to discourage blind guessing, so that a candidate who guesses randomly does not gain an unfair advantage over one who answers only what they know.

Do all competitive exams have the same negative marking?

No. The penalty varies by exam. UPSC and RRB use one-third of the question’s marks, NEET and JEE Main deduct 1 mark on 4-mark questions (one-fourth), SSC CGL Tier 1 deducts 0.50 on 2-mark questions, and most banking exams deduct 0.25. Always check the rule for your specific exam.

Are unattempted questions penalised?

In almost every Indian competitive exam, unattempted questions score zero with no penalty. Negative marking applies only to questions you answer incorrectly, which is why leaving a doubtful question blank is often the safer choice.

How do these calculators work?

Each calculator multiplies your correct answers by the marks per question, then subtracts your wrong answers multiplied by that exam’s deduction. The exam-specific pages pre-fill the official scheme, while the custom calculator lets you set your own values. All results are computed instantly in your browser with no signup.

Is the score from these calculators official?

No. These are unofficial estimation tools to help you predict your score from an answer key or memory before official results are declared. They reflect the published marking schemes but are not connected to any examination authority.
