CGPA to Percentage Calculator

CBSE reports results on a 10-point grade scale. Each subject earns a grade point (a 10 for the top band, 9 for the next, and so on), and your CGPA is the average of your grade points across the five main subjects. To turn that grade point into a familiar percentage, CBSE multiplies the CGPA by a single fixed number: 9.5.

The 9.5 multiplier is not arbitrary. CBSE arrived at it by looking at the actual marks of students who scored in the top grade band (91 to 100 marks) across several years. The average mark of that band worked out to roughly 95. Since that band maps to a grade point of 10, dividing 95 by 10 gives 9.5, the number that best links a grade point back to a percentage. Multiplying any CGPA by 9.5 therefore reproduces the percentage a student in that grade position would typically have scored.

Because the multiplier is fixed, the conversion is a straight line: a CGPA of 8.0 becomes 76%, 9.0 becomes 85.5%, and a perfect 10 becomes 95%. CBSE does not convert above 95% through this formula, which is why a 10 CGPA maps to 95 rather than 100.

Not always. The x9.5 rule is specific to CBSE school results, and treating it as a universal formula is the most common mistake students make. Colleges and universities set their own conversion rules, and they can differ from CBSE by several percentage points on the same CGPA.

A few widely used variants show how much the method matters. Some universities convert with a plain CGPA x 10. Many IITs and NITs use (CGPA - 0.5) x 10, which subtracts half a point before scaling. Certain engineering schemes use (CGPA - 0.75) x 10 instead. Each of these produces a different percentage for the same CGPA, so a number that is correct for a CBSE Class 10 marksheet can be wrong for a degree transcript.

The safe rule is simple: use x9.5 only for CBSE, and for anything else confirm the exact formula from your institution’s official notification or grade card before you rely on the result. Reversing the conversion means undoing the multiplication. For CBSE, you divide the percentage by 9.5 instead of multiplying. So a student with 85% has a CGPA of 85 / 9.5, which is about 8.95. A student with 76% has a CGPA of 76 / 9.5 = 8.0.

If your institution uses a different multiplier, divide by that number instead. For a plain x10 scale, 85% becomes a CGPA of 8.5. The “% to CGPA” tab in the calculator applies the reverse formula for whichever board you select, so you do not have to do the division by hand.

Marks to percentage is the most direct conversion of all: divide the marks you obtained by the total marks, then multiply by 100. A score of 425 out of 500 is (425 / 500) x 100 = 85%. A score of 380 out of 500 is (380 / 500) x 100 = 76%.

This is useful when you have raw marks rather than a CGPA, for instance a single unit test or a subject total.
